Life Skills-Based Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH)
By 2030, YMCA Ethiopia aims to strengthen and expand safe, inclusive spaces that empower individuals to care for their physical, spiritual, and mental health. This initiative ultimately enhances the wellbeing and resilience of their families and communities. Recognizing that Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) is a broad concept intertwined with essential life skills, YMCA Ethiopia integrates life skills into its SRH initiatives, particularly for adolescents and youth. Our primary goal is to provide life skills-based SRH education, information, and training for adolescents and youth (AYs), enabling them to make informed decisions regarding their SRH in daily life. Our activities are designed to foster a health service-seeking behavior among AYs, ensuring they have access to necessary resources and support.YMCA Ethiopia implements various SRH projects across 12 local branches, funded by organizations such as British Columbia YMCA, SAT, FAWE, Y Global, and others. Collaborating with local duty bearers, we focus on beneficiary selection, facilitation, and referral, as well as monitoring and evaluation to assess the effectiveness of our programs. To effectively disseminate SRH knowledge, we train over 70 peer leaders annually. Our training covers essential topics such as anatomy, consent, gender-based violence (GBV), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), pregnancy, family planning services, and basic life skills like self-image, self-esteem, self-confidence, peer pressure, and decision-making. Utilizing standardized training methodologies, these peer educators are equipped to reach more than 3,000 adolescents and youth each year through engaging techniques, including role play, scenario discussions, storytelling, and scientific facts. Our sessions focus on instilling a health service-seeking behavior among AYs, linking them to public and private SRH service providers for counseling, family planning, reporting GBV, and STI testing and treatment. We ensure these connections are effective through customized coupons that facilitate access to services and regular review meetings with service providers who have signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with YMCA branches to assess referral utilization. As a result, 40% of trained and educated AYs receive SRH services through our established referral system.YMCA Ethiopia adheres to a strict philosophy of “no one left behind,” ensuring that at least 50% of our beneficiaries are female and 10% are youth with disabilities. This commitment guarantees equitable access to vital SRH education and services.Through our life skills-based SRH initiatives, YMCA Ethiopia empowers adolescents and youth to take charge of their health and wellbeing. By equipping them with knowledge and skills, we are fostering a generation capable of making informed decisions, seeking necessary services, and contributing positively to their communities.
