Empowering Youth as Peace Builders at YMCA Ethiopia

YMCA Ethiopia envisions becoming a global voice in the fight against systemic discrimination, inequity, injustice, and racism in all its forms. We are committed to amplifying the voices of young people and the communities we serve, ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard. Our mission is to empower youth to become peace builders, transformative activists, and advocates for diversity, equity, inclusion, and social change. To achieve this vision, we implement projects aimed at fostering meaningful youth participation in peace-building efforts across Ethiopia, specifically in Addis Ababa, Adama, Mekele, Wolaita Sodo, and Bahir Dar. Targeting youth, including those with disabilities aged 18 to 29, our initiatives recognize the critical role that young people play in shaping the future of their communities. By engaging them in these efforts, we aim to create a generation of proactive leaders committed to social justice. One of our key activities involves training peace promoters. We have successfully trained 200 young and adult peace promoters who conduct grassroots peace promotion sessions within their communities. These sessions foster coexistence and understanding among diverse groups, reaching over 6000 youth and community members. Through these initiatives, participants are equipped with the necessary tools to advocate for peace and contribute to a harmonious society.Recognizing that unemployment is a significant factor contributing to conflict, our projects also focus on providing business skills training to more than 150 unemployed youths. This training supports their entrepreneurial aspirations and empowers them to contribute positively to their communities. By addressing economic challenges, we help mitigate one of the root causes of unrest.Additionally, we provide startup capital to aspiring entrepreneurs to enhance their livelihoods. So far, 60 youths have successfully received funds to launch their businesses. This financial support not only empowers individuals but also stimulates local economies, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among young people.Through these initiatives, YMCA Ethiopia aims to empower young people to become proactive agents of change while advancing sustainable development and ensuring the fulfillment of human rights in the region. By fostering a culture of peace and inclusion, we are contributing to a more equitable society where all individuals, regardless of their background, can thrive.
